Jason Collins, the NBA’s first openly gay player, has died at the age of 47. Sources close to the family confirm that Collins passed away unexpectedly at his home in Los Angeles on Tuesday. The cause of death has not yet been determined, but an investigation is underway.
Collins made history in 2013 when he came out as gay in a Sports Illustrated cover story, becoming the first active male athlete in a major professional US team sport to do so. At the time, he was a free agent, but he later signed a 10-day contract with the Brooklyn Nets, playing two seasons before retiring in 2014.
His decision to come out was hailed as a watershed moment for LGBTQ+ representation in sports. It took courage, he said at the time, to live openly and honestly. But behind the scenes, friends say, Collins struggled with the weight of being a trailblazer. He faced death threats and constant scrutiny, but he never wavered in his commitment to equality.
Born in Northridge, California, Collins was a standout centre at Stanford University before being drafted 18th overall by the Houston Rockets in 2001. He played for seven teams over 13 seasons, including the New Jersey Nets, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, and Washington Wizards. Known as a rugged defender and a locker room leader, he was never a star, but he earned respect for his grit and professionalism.
After retiring, Collins became an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, working with organisations like the Human Rights Campaign and Athlete Ally. He also appeared in documentaries and spoke at colleges, urging young people to be true to themselves.
Tributes have poured in from across the sports world. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver called Collins a “courageous pioneer” whose legacy will endure. Former teammate Paul Pierce said Collins “made the game better just by being himself.”
But there are questions. Sources close to the investigation say Collins had been in good health recent months, though he had spoken privately about feeling isolated. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office has not released any details about the circumstances of his death. No foul play is suspected at this time, but detectives are reviewing CCTV footage from his neighbourhood.
The timing of his death is particularly poignant. It comes just weeks after the NBA celebrated its annual Pride Night, and days after a new law was passed in Florida restricting LGBTQ+ topics in schools. Activists worry that Collins’s death could be used by both sides of the culture war. But for now, the focus is on the man who changed the game.
Jason Collins is survived by his twin brother Jarron, also a former NBA player, and his parents. Funeral arrangements are pending. The NBA has announced that a moment of silence will be held before all games tonight.
